Duncan Repertory: Sans Limites
Gems from the original repertory of the young Isadora Duncan,
as they were seen for the first time…
Few companies today carry on the heritage of Isadora Duncan, and among these, Lori Belilove’s Isadora Duncan Dance Company is recognized as the most authentic and artistically innovative. Julia Pond, company member from 2001-2005, presents solos from the original Duncan repertory.
The refined gestures of the Duncan work, inspired by Greek art and sculpture, are unmistakably historical yet, in the best artistic tradition, have not lost their power to affect today’s audience. The expressiveness and sophisticated simplicity of each movement recalls a time nearly lost.
The performance is a rare combination of music and dance which transports the audience to a different era. The music, waltzes by Brahms, Schubert and Chopin, is that chosen by Duncan herself, in a decision considered scandalous at the time—as the music had not been specifically composed for dance. The evening is animated by a light and free spirit, yet capable of reaching the audience’s deeper emotions. The model of dancer and pianist with simple curtains for scenery allows the dances to be seen in their original context.
Dances include the innocent, searching Prelude no.7 of Chopin, the “Greeting” by Brahms, Chopin’s effervescent Minute Waltz, and Schubert’s teasing Moment Musicale, taking the audience on a journey of artistic discovery similar to what Duncan herself experienced.
